Discussion

Forests, meadows, grassy hillsides, beaches, deflation plains, clearcuts, streambanks, rock outcrops, talus, roadsides, from sea level to alpine, in various soils. Flowering May–Oct. 0–2500 m. BW, Casc, Col, CR, ECas, Est, Lava, Sisk, WV. CA, ID, NV, WA; north to AK, east to SC, ME, adjacent Canada, south to northern Mexico; Asia, introduced in Europe. Native.

At first glance, the bright white phyllaries of this species may be mistaken for petals.
